Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Strawberry Banana Smoothie — Creamy 3-Ingredient Recipe

If there’s one smoothie that has never let me down, it’s this one. Strawberry banana.

I know, it sounds almost too simple. Three ingredients? Really? But that’s why it works. No protein powder that makes it chalky, no handful of spinach you’re pretending you like, no weird superfood that costs $30 and tastes like dirt. Just strawberries, banana, milk. Creamy, pink, sweet, cold, tastes like strawberry milkshake but is actually fruit and takes literally 2 minutes.

My daughter calls it “pink milkshake breakfast” and I let her believe it’s dessert. My husband, who usually says “smoothies don’t fill me up,” drinks this and doesn’t ask for snacks 20 minutes later because banana plus milk actually does keep you full.

And the best part? You don’t need a fancy juicer or a $400 blender that needs its own parking spot. I make this with my regular blender and sometimes just a mason jar shaker when I’m lazy. More on that below because you asked about tools, not just ingredients.

Let’s make the 3-ingredient smoothie that actually tastes good.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Creamy, pink, 3 ingredients, 2 minutes — tastes like milkshake, actually just fruit and milk.

Why 3 Ingredients Is Actually Better

I’ve made smoothies with 10 ingredients and they end up tasting like… everything and nothing. Like, you can’t taste strawberry or banana, just “healthy.”

With three ingredients, each one shines:

Strawberries bring sweet-tart and that pretty pink color. Frozen strawberries are best because they make it thick and cold without ice watering it down. Fresh works too, just add few ice cubes.

Banana brings creamy sweetness and body. Frozen banana is the secret to thick, milkshake-like texture. Fresh banana works but smoothie will be thinner. My bananas that are spotty brown and sad on counter? Peel, slice, freeze flat — future smoothie gold.

Milk brings it together and makes it creamy, not watery. Any milk — dairy whole milk is creamiest, oat milk is my favorite dairy-free because it’s naturally sweet and thick, almond is lighter. I use oat most mornings.

That’s it. No added sugar needed if banana is ripe. If you like sweeter, drizzle honey, but try without first — ripe banana plus sweet strawberries is usually enough.

The Kitchen Tools I Actually Use (Not Just Ingredients)

You asked what tools I use, not just what goes in the blender, so here’s my real setup — not fancy chef stuff, just what’s on my counter every morning:

1. My blender — the workhorse: I have a Ninja Professional, not the super expensive Vitamix, and it’s been going strong 3 years. For this smoothie I use the regular big pitcher. I put milk first, then banana, then strawberries on top — frozen fruit on top so it doesn’t stick to bottom and blade spins. If you have a high-speed blender like Vitamix, you can throw everything in any order, it doesn’t care.

But here’s my lazy trick: if I only have fresh fruit and don’t want to clean big blender, I use my little single-serve bullet cup that came with Ninja — one cup, blend, drink from same cup. Less dishes.

2. Mason jar shaker — for when I don’t even want to blend: Okay, hear me out. If your banana is super ripe and soft and strawberries are fresh and soft, you can actually make a chunky version in a mason jar shaker. Mash banana with fork in jar, add diced super ripe strawberries, pour milk, close lid, shake hard for 30 seconds. It’s not silky smooth like blender, it’s more like strawberry banana milk with little fruit bits — my daughter actually prefers this chunky version and calls it “strawberry banana milk.” For this I use my 16 oz mason jar with screw lid that seals tight — I learned the hard way with a leaky lid and strawberry milk on my shirt.

3. Small wooden cutting board — the one that’s always out: I keep a small olive wood board just for fruit. For this smoothie, I slice banana on it straight into blender, hull strawberries on it. It’s tiny, so I don’t have to drag big board. If you’re using frozen fruit from bag, you don’t even need board.

4. Reusable metal straw — because it makes it feel fancy: I bought pack of bent stainless steel straws with cleaning brush. Drinking smoothie with metal straw feels like café, not kitchen. Plus my daughter thinks she’s fancy.

5. Measuring cup that I don’t actually measure with: I eyeball now — half cup frozen strawberries, one banana, 3/4 cup milk. But when I started, I used 1/4 cup measure to keep it consistent. If you like precise, use 1/4 cup measure for fruit, 3/4 cup measure for milk.

6. Little spoon and fine mesh strainer for strawberry tops: I hull strawberries with small paring knife or just pull tops off with fingers if super ripe. No fancy huller needed.

That’s my whole smoothie station. Blender, mason jar shaker, small board, metal straw. No extra gadgets.

My real setup — Ninja blender big pitcher, single-serve bullet cup, 16 oz mason jar shaker, small wooden board, metal straws. No fancy juicer needed.

What You Need (The 3 Ingredients Plus Optional Extras)

Makes 1 big glass or 2 kid glasses

  • 1 banana — frozen is best for creamy thick, sliced first then frozen. Fresh works, add 4-5 ice cubes
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen strawberries — unsweetened, whole or sliced. Fresh works too, use 1 cup fresh plus ice
  • 3/4 cup milk — dairy whole, oat milk my favorite dairy-free, almond, coconut, whatever you have

Optional if you want to jazz it up (but you don’t need to):

  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt — makes it extra creamy and adds protein, still 4 ingredients but my go-to when I want it more filling
  • Drizzle honey or maple syrup — if berries are tart
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter or almond butter — makes it more milkshake-like and keeps you full longer
  • Few mint leaves — fresh pop that makes it taste like fancy café smoothie

That’s it. Three.

How I Make It With The Tools Above

I’m not going to do boring step-by-step like “Step 1 add, Step 2 blend” because you know how to blend.

Here’s how I actually do it in real morning chaos:

For Blender Version (my everyday): I pour milk first into Ninja big pitcher — this is key, milk first so blade doesn’t stick — then break frozen banana with hands straight into pitcher (I freeze banana chunks flat so they break easily), then pour frozen strawberries on top. For this I use my 3/4 cup measure for milk, don’t even measure fruit, just handful. Lid on, blend 30-45 seconds high, until pink and smooth and creamy. If it’s too thick and blender is struggling, I add splash more milk through little lid hole and blend again. Pour into tall glass, metal straw in, done. I rinse blender immediately with hot water so it doesn’t dry and stick.

For Mason Jar Shaker Version (when I’m extra lazy or kids want to help): I take my 16 oz mason jar, mash super ripe fresh banana with fork right in jar — for this I use fork, not blender — add diced fresh super ripe strawberries small dice so they mush a bit, pour milk, screw lid tight, shake like I’m mad at it for 30 seconds. It’s chunky, sweet, kids can shake it themselves and feel like they made it. For this I use that small wooden board to dice strawberries tiny.

Milk first, then banana, then strawberries on top — my Ninja blends it in 30 seconds when I do this order.

My Tips So Yours Is Creamy Not Watery

  • Frozen fruit is non-negotiable for thick. Fresh fruit plus no ice equals thin watery smoothie that tastes like strawberry milk left out. Frozen banana plus frozen strawberries equals thick milkshake without ice.
  • Milk first into blender. If you put frozen fruit first, it sticks, blade spins air, you have to stop and scrape. Milk first, then fruit on top, blends smooth first try.
  • Ripe banana equals sweet. Spotty brown bananas are sweetest. Greenish banana is bland and needs honey. Freeze those spotty ones.
  • Don’t add too much milk at once. Start with 3/4 cup, blend, if too thick add splash more. Too much milk at start equals thin you can’t fix without more frozen fruit.
  • Clean blender immediately. Rinse with hot water right after pouring, or milk dries into concrete at bottom. If you forgot, fill halfway hot water plus drop dish soap, blend 10 seconds, rinse — clean.

Mason jar shaker version — mash, pour milk, shake 30 seconds — chunky, sweet, kids love shaking it themselves.

What to Serve With

This is breakfast on its own, but here’s how I serve it when I want more:

  • My Fluffy Easy Banana Pancakes — tiny pancake plus smoothie is breakfast that feels like brunch hotel
  • Greek Yogurt Banana Bread — banana bread plus banana smoothie is banana party, I’m not sorry
  • Super Moist Chocolate Chip Banana Bread — chocolate chip banana bread plus this smoothie is my kid’s favorite Saturday
  • Healthy Blueberry Yogurt Cake — blueberry plus strawberry banana is fruity overload in best way
  • Top 10 Refreshing Beverages — if you want more drink ideas besides this one

More 3-ingredient and protein-packed favorites from my kitchen:

Storage

  • Best fresh: Drink right after blending, thickest and coldest.
  • Fridge: Mason jar with lid, 24 hours max. It separates a bit — banana settles — shake hard before drinking. Texture a little thinner next day but still good.
  • Freezer packs: My favorite meal prep — in zip bag, add sliced banana plus strawberries, freeze flat. Morning, dump bag in blender, add milk, blend. No chopping morning.
  • Don’t freeze finished smoothie: Texture goes weird and icy chunky. Freeze fruit packs, not finished smoothie.

FAQ

Can I use fresh fruit only?
Yes but add 4-5 ice cubes or it will be thin. Frozen is what makes it thick and cold without watering down.

Can I make it dairy-free?
Absolutely — oat milk is my favorite dairy-free for creamy, almond milk lighter, coconut milk tropical. All work great.

Can I add protein powder?
Yes — 1 scoop vanilla protein powder blends fine with this flavor, adds 20g protein. Add with fruit on top so it doesn’t stick to bottom.

Why is my smoothie gritty?
Usually cheap protein powder or not blending long enough. Blend full 30-45 seconds. If using only fruit and milk, it shouldn’t be gritty — blend longer.

Can I make it without banana?
You can, but banana is what makes it creamy and sweet. Without banana, use 1/2 avocado plus extra strawberries plus splash honey for creamy.

If you have spotty bananas on counter right now that are giving you judgy looks, this is your sign. Peel, slice, freeze, blend with frozen strawberries and milk.

Which tool are you — blender person or mason jar shaker person? I’m blender weekdays, shaker weekends when I’m too lazy to plug anything.

Let me know — fresh or frozen fruit? And did your kids think it’s milkshake too?

Instructions

Standard Blender Method
1
Add milk first

Pour ¾ cup of milk into a blender pitcher. Starting with the liquid on the bottom helps the blender blades catch the frozen fruit and run smoothly.

2
Add the fruit

Add the frozen banana chunks, followed by the frozen strawberries.

3
Blend

Blend on high for 30–45 seconds, until completely smooth, creamy, and pink. If the smoothie is too thick, add a small splash of extra milk and blend again.

4
Taste & Serve

Taste the smoothie. Add Greek yogurt for creaminess, honey for sweetness, or nut butter if desired, and blend for another few seconds. Pour into a tall glass and serve immediately!

No Blender? Try the Mason Jar Method!
1
Mash it up

Using very ripe fresh fruit (not frozen), mash the banana directly in a 16-ounce mason jar with a fork.

2
Add berries & milk

Add finely diced, very ripe strawberries and pour in the cold milk. Secure the lid tightly.

3
Shake & enjoy

Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. Enjoy as a delicious, chunky strawberry-banana milk drink!

Kitchen Notes

🧊
Frozen Fruit is Best

Use frozen banana and frozen strawberries for the thickest, creamiest smoothie. Adding ice cubes waters down the flavor, so relying on frozen fruit is the secret!

🍌
Spotty Bananas

Very ripe, spotty bananas provide the most natural sweetness. If your banana is green or pure yellow, you might need to add a drizzle of honey to balance it.

💧
Milk First

Always add the milk to the blender before the fruit. It prevents the blades from struggling and getting jammed with solid frozen chunks.

🥛
Dairy-Free Options

This recipe works perfectly with dairy-free milks! Oat milk gives the creamiest result, while almond milk makes a lighter, thinner smoothie.

Storage & Prep
Best Fresh

Smoothies are always best enjoyed immediately after blending while they are frosty and thick.

Fridge Storage

Store covered for up to 24 hours. Shake well before drinking because the smoothie will naturally separate.

Freezer Prep

Freeze sliced bananas and strawberries together in freezer bags. When you want a smoothie, just dump the bag into the blender and add milk!

Don’t freeze the finished smoothie!

If you put a blended smoothie back in the freezer, the texture will become icy and unpleasant. (Unless you pour it into popsicle molds!)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use fresh fruit?

Yes. Use fresh strawberries and banana, but add 4–5 ice cubes to make the smoothie cold and thick.

Can I add protein powder?

Yes! Vanilla protein powder pairs beautifully with strawberry and banana flavors.

Can I make it without banana?

Banana provides the creamy texture. For a banana-free version, try ½ of an avocado with extra strawberries and a little honey.

Why is my smoothie too thin?

You probably added too much milk or used fresh fruit. Add more frozen strawberries or banana and blend again!
